Brittany Places to visit THE WALLED CITY OF CONCARNEAU

The historic heart of the town of Concarneau, the walled city will seduce you with its ramparts full of history. A must-see in Brittany, the walled town of Concarneau sits majestically in the heart of the town's fishing and sailing ports. The interior has retained its ancient charm.

The history of this mythical fishing and trading port

Concarneau is a fishing town and has always been populated by sailors. These fortifications, born of war in the Middle Ages, have undergone numerous modifications over the centuries and have been classified as historical monuments since the beginning of the 20th century. They evoke the past of this military place.

On an island 350 m long and 100 m wide, the city is surrounded by granite ramparts 2.5 m to 3 m wide, nine towers and three gates. Its famous belfry, which dominates the entrance, was only built in 1906, but this has not prevented it from becoming the emblem of the town of Concarneau. Its clock has been telling the time to the inhabitants of the town for over a century.
